Introduction

ROAD SHOW – the essence at the edge of thing, draws its inspiration from the commons - that which we have lost, must regain access to and repair. The project draws into a single conduit over 20 years of travelling, writing, performance, production and advocacy. It reflects on the natural environment, the people, cultures and practices that know these spaces and our need to revive our deeper associations with that which nurtures and nourishes us all.

Background

For more than a third of my life I have shot, recorded, produced, witnessed and written about the commons, the diminishing cultures, a contraction of knowledge and wisdom, the rise of mediocrity, and the homogenisation, automation and dehumanisation of food, clothing and education.

In spite of all that challenges and harms, the human spirit endures. ROAD SHOW is a story of people and the commons, from what the road has taught I return to it, to re-connect the dots, along with the many others who reach through the malaise to breath hope into the petri dish – stories of broken and liberated folk and songs drawing on the essence at the edge of things.

ROAD SHOW Cape Town builds on the fledgling collaboration commenced in early 2008 with Alex Bozas and Andrew Parker. It draws from their expertise, passions and networks, bringing together performers and artists for whom doing nothing is not an option!
