Leaping five years for change

Over twenty years ago some of us were introducing modems to NGOs in Southeast Asia, convinced this was the most secure and fastest means to communicate critical information from the region to support groups and the international media. Five years later we started guiding those same groups and many more onto the web, migrating them off store-and-forward networks to the increasingly popular Internet.

Another five years we were building content management systems that saw the rapid aggregation of independent, community based news across the internet, often more advanced and well read than mainstream press still struggling with the web. Leap ahead another five years and its 2005, we thought it a good idea to start publishing videos, so work commenced on an open video distribution platform around the same time as Youtube appeared.

As we breach the second decade of computer networking modems have been replaced by smart phones, but the needs of out of reach communities remain.
